A busy thanksgiving weekend of North Shore football
improved the Mustangs and Lions records to 8-0 and 9-0 respectively on
Saturday.
The Mustangs pounded the Hochelaga Archers 61-0 for their second shut
out victory of the season at Glen Francis McHugh Stadium. The Lions
later took Westwood Park in St. Lazare on a thrilling 32-26
rollercoaster win over the Stallions.
The Archers inability to consistently move the ball into Mustang
territory made it easy for the offence to convert on great field
position. Struggling to find their third victory, Hochelaga came in
from the East End forced to play the league’s best defence
without their starting quarterback and running back.
The win did not fairly portray how competitive Midget AAA is, North
Shore sitting in first, have yet to clinch home field advantage. They
will get their chance next week when they travel into Beauce country to
take on the dragons boasting a 6-2 record in third place.
“It’s always a tough test when the Mustangs and Dragons
play each other,” said head coach Justin McHugh. “As long
as we play hard, we’ll come back with the win.”
Afterwards the Lions were
caught in a tough battle of their own. In a surprisingly entertaining
game North Shore proved they can rise to the challenge even with a few
injuries to the starting line-up.
The Lions and Stallions were tied at
19 going into half time. In the second half both teams exchanged
touchdowns until North Shore QB Vincent Bourgon scrambled for the final
major mid-way through the fourth putting them ahead 32-26. Defensive
linemen Glody Bomolo made the play of the night by sacking the
St-Lazare QB to snuff out the late threat.
“This St-Lazare team is the most
improved (in the league),” said Head Coach Jason Jourdenais.
“We had a few injuries, and it was a good time for our rookies to
step up. (We reacted well under pressure), we can’t expect them
to react like adults, 14-15 year olds can only be expected to do so
much.”
Next week the Lions will face the
Lakeshore Cougars at home for the regular season finally. For more
